Hazardous Materials

Hazardous materials at RIT are well managed and contained to prevent incidents that may have widespread impacts. However, incidents can occur in even the safest environment and could potentially result in an emergency. Incidents may result from equipment failure, human error, failure to follow established procedures, natural disaster, or sabotage.

If at the Scene of an Accident

Call 475-3333 (v/tty) as soon as possible to report the nature and location of the accident.
Stay away from the accident scene and help keep others away. Do not come into contact with the spilled substance. Try not to inhale gases, fumes and smoke. Cover mouth with a cloth while leaving the area. Move upwind (and if necessary, uphill) from the accident.
Do not come into contact with accident victims.

Notification Methods

In the event of a major chemical emergency, you will be notified by campus officials and other responders by email or with fliers.

The chief communications officer (University News) will inform you of:

The type of health hazard
The area affected
How to protect yourself
Evacuation routes (if necessary)
Shelter locations
Type and location of medical facilities
And the phone numbers to call if you need extra help

Shelter-in-place

Covering your mouth with a damp cloth will provide you with a minimal amount of protection to your breathing.
Close all windows
Turn off all fans, heating and air conditioning systems
Move to a room with the fewest windows and doors, and is above-ground (not A-level).
Place wet towels in the crack under the doors.
Remain in the room until campus officials instruct you to leave.

Evacuation

When appropriate, Campus officials may decide to evacuate an area for your protection. It is important to stay calm, listen carefully and follow all instructions. Listen to a radio or television for evacuation announcements. Be sure that your area is included in the evacuation before you leave. If time allows, pack some essential items to take with you.

If you are told to evacuate immediately

Take your personal belongings and medications
Close and lock your windows
Shut off all vents
Lock the door
Move quickly and calmly

After

Return to building only when campus officials say it is safe.
Follow instructions from campus officials concerning the safety of food and water.
Follow instructions from emergency officials concerning clean-up methods, if necessary.
