Thought for the Month
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness...
October 2004 will stand out in my memory as an embodiment of this classic quote from Charles Dickens' Tale of Two Cities. The robbery at Crossroads resulting in injuries to two of our colleagues and trauma to many others is a stark reminder that we are not insulated from the reality of potential violence in our midst. It also underscored the wisdom of the critical incident training provided to dozens of staff and faculty to effectively respond to these types of emergencies. And, it was a reminder of how unusual such an event is in our community. We are indeed fortunate to work in an environment that reflects our open society and is enriched by stimulating students and faculty and staff colleagues. And what better evidence of this than the Outstanding Staff Awards ceremony conducted by Staff Council on October 20? Ingle Auditorium was filled with administrators, faculty, staff and student employees who offered cheers, signs, applause, and a few tears as staff colleagues from every college and division were honored for their extraordinary accomplishments and commitment.
What is the lesson of October 2004? There is nothing more important to RIT's success than our human resources.
For your convenience and reference, all issues of Gray Matters are archived by topic and newsletter date on the HR web site on the left sidebar. As always, your feedback on Gray Matters is welcome, as well as suggestions for topics and issues you would like addressed in future newsletters.
Sincerely...Kathleen
