Future of RIT Housing FAQs

Why is Riverknoll being replaced?

RIT Housing Operations is committed to providing our students with state-of-the-art housing options. To anticipate the growing housing and lifestyle needs of our students, one of the oldest apartment complexes, Riverknoll, will be replaced with new housing that will be built through several phases of construction.

When will the first phase of the new housing be available for occupancy?

The first phase of the new RIT housing is anticipated to be completed in 2010.

How will you be communicating with Riverknoll residents regarding future housing and construction updates?

Housing Operations staff will work personally with each Riverknoll resident during the Housing Selection process in February 2010. A letter will be sent to Riverknoll residents in October to outline the process and the assistance to be offered.

Construction updates will be posted on the Facilities Management Services' website at http://facilities.rit.edu/, as well as through the Updates link on the Future of RIT Housing site. Housing Operations will also be sending out informative emails and print publications concerning construction details.

What will the new housing include?

The new housing will be primarily sophomore housing with RIT’s Entrepreneurial Hall located on the fourth floor of the main residential building. The complex will include commercial spaces, three-story residential buildings consisting of 414 spaces, and flexible meeting spaces. Click here to view conceptual renderings of RIT’s new housing.

New housing features:

The two new dining facilities coming to the complex are Salsarita’s Fresh Mex Cantina and RIT’s “Global Grill.” Salsarita’s is a fresh, Mexican, fast-casual restaurant that offers made-to-order burritos, tacos, tortilla pizzas, taco salads, and much more made from the freshest ingredients. Adjacent to the restaurant area will be a bar serving margaritas and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. RIT’s “Global Grill” will feature a menu of exclusive international cuisines and recipes from around the world served via a buffet of fresh ingredients prepared on a Mongolian grill.

When will more detailed information about the new housing be available?

Information and updates will be posted to Housing’s Facebook page and the “Future of RIT Housing” site, accessible through the main Housing webpage http://housing.rit.edu, as it becomes available. Please check the sites frequently for updates.

Will the new housing be named "Global Village"?

"Global Village" is the current name. The final name has not been determined.

What is the goal of the new housing?

The new housing aims to provide a global environment for RIT students as they prepare to enter the global community, travel overseas, and join a culturally diverse workforce. To support this goal, and the entrepreneurial and global missions of RIT, each residential and commercial location will represent different regions from around the world through use of aesthetic décor and design, materials, patterns, colors, lighting, fabrics/finishes, etc. “Global Village” aims to provide students with a global living experience along side their studies and time at RIT.

When will the other buildings in Riverknoll be taken down and phase II of the new housing built?

Details concerning Phase II are unknown at this time. The remaining buildings in Riverknoll will be taken off line at the end of summer quarter 20094.
