Frequently Asked Questions

What are some things I should consider about living with a roommate?
Actually there are ten issues you should consider:

  1. You need to be able to speak up about your needs, and respect your roommate's needs as well.
  2. Do you share the same religious values as your roommate(s)?
  3. What kind of living conditions do you prefer? Does everything always need to be in its place? Can you deal with an occasional mess? Or do you prefer utter chaos?
  4. Do you lead a quiet, private lifestyle? Do you prefer the night life? Do you mix between the two?
  5. How do you want to handle groceries? Do you want to share or do you go by the every-one-out-for-themselves-so-get-your-own theory? Discuss how you'd like to handle shared items, such as toilet paper, dishwasher detergent, or ketchup, etc.
  6. Do you like to clean as needed? Or do you prefer having a set schedule?
  7. How do you plan on taking messages for your roommate(s) when they're not available? a) never b) rarely c) always? If you picked choice C, a central message board may be helpful.
  8. How do you feel about sharing your personal belongings and items?
  9. How do you feel about guests? Are their certain quiet hours you or your roommate(s) need? What about you or your roommate(s) better half?
  10. Can you and your roommates set a date when everyone agrees to pay the rent, phone, and other bills? We all know money can be put toward better things, unfortunately, apartment living requires financial planning and responsibility.

Can I list information about my off-campus apartment on Housing Connections?
As of now, RIT Housing Connections cannot accept off-campus listings. There are however, several non-RIT online resources:

Craigslist.org
The Renters Guide
Rent Rochester
OCASA (Off Campus and Apartment Student Association)
Roommates.com
Rent.com (must register)
My New Place

Landlords and students who are looking to post information may do so with flyers on campus, usually posted in the Student Alumni Union, Grace Watson Hall, and at various bus stops around campus. Many other areas require prior approval before posting, so be sure to check first.
